Haxby plans for next year’s Yorkshire in Bloom

by Ian Cuthbertson on 24 October, 2011

As reported previously, Haxby Town Council had had a recent success in Yorkshire in Bloom.  They are now planning for next year’s competition and I was invited to help prepare the ground for a new flower bed in the centre of the village.  Members of the Town Council had managed to hire a very clever machine that takes turf off the ground ready to be rolled up and saved until it is needed.

Having marked out the site, we all gathered to start the process and after we had persuaded the machine to work, we were up and running and the turf came off the ground like peeling an orange.

The bed is now in the process of being planted up and – as well as bringing welcome colour  to The Village – the main street through Haxby – it will commemorate a young man from Haxby who, whilst a serving soldier, recently died in Afghanistan.

I hope they will be as successful in the 2012 Yorkshire in Bloom competition as they have been this year.
