Several Lib Dems joined the group protesting against selling off Union Terrace Car and Coach Park to York St John University the other day and I joined them after having been to another meeting at the Guildhall. Despite torrential rain earlier, there were still protesters at the Priory Street Centre where the Labour Cabinet were meeting. Some of those who stayed until the end can be seen in the photograph – they had waited there for over two hours.
Many residents of Haxby and Wigginton have told me about how worried they are about the possible loss of Union Terrace. It is the car park on their route into town and many of them use it regularly. They are very worried about the potential effect on the Gillygate shops and the surrounding areas – even as far as right into the city centre.
The LibDem group have called an Extraordinary Meeting of the Full Council to urge the Cabinet to withdraw from the sale and – if it is to come forward again – to consult fully and thoroughly.
Only time will tell what will happen but I, along with others, will be expressing local residents’ concerns and opposing this badly thought through sale.
