Crime continues to fall in Haxby and Wigginton, reflecting the trend in crime figures across York. Since the Lib Dems took control of the Council in 2003 and crime has fallen across the city by just under 20%.
Latest figures for the ward (Dec 10) show there were just 9 crimes compared with 15 in the same period of 2009 -a decrease of 40%. While anti-social behaviour for the three month period of September to November showed a
slight increase of just over 3% against last year, we understand that much of the anti-social behaviour arose from over-enthusiastic snowball fights.
Local councillor Paul Firth said, “This looks like a one-off rise that came with the heavy snow but we will be monitoring the figures closely with our local safer Neighbourhood Team.”
Across the city, the fight against crime continues through what is known as ‘Operation Secure’. This resulted in a spate of arrests of the city’s most wanted suspects over Christmas and the New Year into January. Arrests were made for: theft, burglary, robbery, assault, drug offences and breach of bail conditions.
York Lib Dems want to make sure that crime figures continue to fall. High visibility policing and response to requests for assistance are key priorities and the Council will again provide money to support crime prevention
through its Target Hardening budget.
