Lib Dems Save York Libaries

by jonathanlancaster on 28 February, 2011

Despite a ‘challenging’ budget round, York Lib Dems have pledged to keep  every one of the City’s libraries open. And that includes our own local library here in Haxby.

The announcement came as concerns emerged that Labour were planning closures. In comments about plans to use libraries to help get more people online, Labour Councillors had said that they had concerns about the potential success of the plans in the light of possible library closures.

Local Lib Dem campaigner Ian Cuthbertson said, “This isn’t the first time that Labour have suggested that they are planning to close down some of the city’s libraries. I’m sure residents will be getting concerned about the future of our libraries under Labour.”

“Lib Dem plans mean that all of our 14 libraries will still be there after this budget. We are making this long term commitment, because we believe libraries are vital to the community. They are also a good way to provide internet access for families which don’t have a PC. But, after the threat from Labour, I’m worried that Tory councillors still have nothing at all to say about this. That means our libraries could also be at risk under the Tories”
