Our own Haxby and Wigginton Councillor, Richard Watson, has become the new Sheriff of York. Originally, as well as being the monarch’s local representative, the Sheriff was responsible for keeping law and order……and raising taxes! Today, the role is ceremonial and ambassadorial, sharing the civic function with the Lord Mayor.

“It is a huge honour to take on the role,” Richard commented. “I have already attended a large range of events and I think they will total about 400 in the year.”
