Many Haxby and Wigginton residents will have been to the Recreation Hall and most will know that it is a well-used venue for local meetings and events. However, many people will be unaware of its long history as a meeting place for people from both villages.

The original hall was built 90 years ago this year and was rebuilt in the 1970’s becoming the hall it is today. As a beautifully-maintained hall with several rooms, plenty of car parking and a well-equipped kitchen, it has seen many events take place – from dancing to blood donor sessions and from parties to flu jabs.

On Saturday 16th July, many of the organisations that use the hall came together to celebrate its rich history and each one had a stall to show what they do and encourage people to join them. Ian had a great time talking to old friends and new, and had a good chat to those on the U3A stand.

Like many other organisations in Haxby & Wigginton, our local U3A branch is very lively. With a great many different activities to suit all tastes. Other exhibitors at the event included the WI, the Guides and Brownies, the Flower Arranging and Bonsai societies and the Wigginton Squash Club.

A raffle was held with lots of prizes, and a cheque was presented to the Air Ambulance. Tea and cake were served to the many visitors, some of whom had been coming to the hall for many years.

As a councillor for Haxby and Wigginton, Ian was pleased to be able to thank the stall holders for helping to make village life so varied and interesting.
