Cold Calling Controlled Zones

Cold Calling Controlled Zones are designed to prevent ‘doorstop crime’, particularly that associated with cold calling such as distraction burglary, and aim to reduce high pressure sales where often vulnerable residents find that they have signed up for something that they don’t actually want.

Residents within a designated zone agree that they do not wish to deal with cold callers, and signs are then put in place to warn uninvited callers that they are not welcome in the area. Residents can report anyone breaching their wishes to Trading Standards or the Police.

There are a number of Cold Calling Controlled Zones already in place in Haxby and Wigginton and City of York Council are currently consulting residents in Long Furrow, Helmsley Grove, Ploughmans Lane and Ploughlands to see if they would like their streets to be designated as controlled zones as well.

If you would like to take part in the consultation, would like to request a survey in your street or just want to find out more, visit the City of York Council website here.
